JAVERT is currently in development, having been conceived, written, and composed by father-daughter team Brad Gelfand and Morgan Gelfand, based on Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. About the Story
-
Post-Revolutionary Paris (1795-1832). A city in moral decay and simmering rebellion.
-
A self-aware theatrical subversion. While Javert’s grief is deadly serious, the musical actively winks at the tropes of 19th-century melodrama, challenging the labels of theatrical "heroes" and "villains."
-
JAVERT reframes the fugitive Valjean as a kidnapper and the child Cosette as a surrogate for his lost younger sister, in a desperate attempt to redeem his life's greatest failure.
-
The story is nudged along by Azelma, “the overlooked Thenardier”, a fourth-wall-breaking teenager who guides the narrative as Javert grapples with his predetermined fate, forcing him to fight not just Valjean, but the very "Canon" itself.

JAVERT is an original musical retelling of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables.
The 1862 novel Les Misérables is over 1,200 pages long. Of these, just a single page is devoted to the backstory of its chief antagonist, Inspector Javert.
JAVERT reimagines Hugo's world, granting this beloved Inspector the one thing his world denied him: mercy.
